Cults-Go Outside

So I'm a little late to the party on this but this new song by Cults is too good not to post. No one seems to know much about these guys yet but Gorilla vs. Bear broke their jam "Go Outside" the other day and it is truly excellent. It's some soulful, sunny, beach-pop driven by a killer xylophone beat and some sugary boy-girl vocals with just the right amount of reverb.

FAMILY PORTRAIT + REAL ESTATE

Ever set out on your bike with a destination, get completely lost in a song, and end up somewhere you have no business being? If you'd listen to Family Portrait or Real Estate during one of these endeavors, you'd probably end up at the beach or a park.

These two bands are in the same post because they'll draw the same mood out of you. Real Estate, Family Portrait's older brother, has been around the blogosphere for part of 2009 and it looks like they're going to be all over the place in 2010. Family Portrait is a little undiscovered gem about to come out of the rough. Click the links below for both EPs.

Trust me, these songs will remind you of something. I'm not sure what, but it will be important.

SINGLE - OBERHOFER [AWAY FRM U]

Imagine a lo-fi compilation of Bloc Party disco drumming, loopy guitar riffs from the old Strokes, and vocals like the Born Ruffians actually went through puberty. That's Oberhofer, and his new single Away From You is a driving pop ballad for 2010. Charting in at just under 4 min in length, it's a very easy song to listen on repeat again and again. This dude will definitely be leading the lo-fi renaissance that is currently dominating the young decade.

LOW SEA [LAS OLAS]

Low Sea is a tragically beautiful duo from Ireland. Their new album is entitled Las Olas. The song below, 'Never Yours'. Okay, this song could have gone in the last post, maybe. However, it's undeniably a little darker than the rest with a sinister synth leading the buildup for a full minute. Also, this band deserves the spotlight.

KURT VILE [CHILDISH PRODIGY]

I don't know what Kurt Vile is going for: the badass, the sick ass acoustic guitarist, or the emotionally insane lyricist. Fact is, he seems to be all of those, and none of those terrible things in between. His new album Childish Prodigy shows it. "Hunchback" is pretty much as gigantic as Audioslave used to be to 12 year old boys. Also, his name is Kurt Vile. What a thug.

ANCIENT CRUX [INTERRACIAL COUPLING]

Travis Sydow is just another 19 year old bro bra from cali, except for the fact he just released a new EP, Interracial Coupling, under the band name Ancient Crux with his buddies. Not a single song on the whole EP is over three minutes. Short and sweet with friendly, stoney guitars, the EP is a great success for the young musician. Makes me jealous. Oh yeah; they're also the same guys from Rapid Youth.

THE PAST IN OUR HOMETOWN

All of these songs by this band Arches will get into your skin. Put em on late at night/early in the morning. It's comfortable; I can't explain it but the songs just hit chords with such familiarity, it's like we've been listening to them the whole time.

ALSO

NEW BORN RUFFIANS
It's like you can here their voices crashing. Look out for the complete new album in June. Yep, I know; that's three months. Luckily they gave us a taste with 'Sole Brother'.

IN AN UPSTAIRS ROOM

If you've yet to hear about Woods, they're like Baby Shambles if they had Neil Young and a slide guitar. They just released a new album, Songs of Shame, which the tracks below "Rain on" and "Military Base" are off of. Get the whole thing. Eat it up.

HARLEM - HIPPIES [ALBUM]

Used to love garage bands until Rolling Stone fucked it up for everybody? Me too, and that's why Harlem's new CD, Hippies, is theee shit. Raspy guitar, fast crashy drums and short songs allow almost anyone to immediately fall in love with these soon to be lo fi superstars.

Band On The Rise: Phantogram

These guys are getting some serious buzz these days and they seem poised for a breakout 2010. They sound like I imagine Portishead would if they were a little less operatic and a little more psychedelic. They've got this trip-hop meets experimental rock vibe going on that I really like. Check out "When I'm Small," it's my favorite from them so far.

Yep, you do still know all the words. If you're a sucker for steel take a listen. If you claim you hate 50, and have no idea why anyone would still listen to anything tainted with his name, check out the instrumental.

Gorilla Zoe's Mixtape Marathon

Zoe's having a pretty prolific February. He's been dropping a new mixtape everyday of the month with such brilliant titles as The Mighty Zoe Young, Shaquille Zoe'Neal, and Don't Mess With The Zoehan. Check out "What We Call It" from day 8's tape Cartunez, it's a straight up ATL banger.

The Knife + Darwin

The Knife are back with another spectacularly weird album. The Charles Darwin inspired electro-opera Tomorrow, In A Year has been out for a minute now but I just got into it today. It's going to take a few listens to get into it but I don't mind because they made Silent Shout so I'll listen to anything they do. For now check out the teaser track "Colouring of Pigeons" and a baller-ass Ratatat remix.

RREEVVEERRBB: HOLIDAY SHORES

Holiday Shores, hailing from Tallanasty, FL, are hitting the reverb. Hard. If you like that type of 'chill wave' music, that's all I have to say.

Buy the album; every song on it is incredible. These guys are great and I'm sure could use the cash to get a leg up.

Heart Skipped A Beat

It's not like the XX needed any more attention on any sort of blog. However, the bass lines in these melodies are so penetrating I must share. It's like the XX somehow managed to take all of the good parts out of Stars and turn it into a darker, heavier, gigantic album. The attention paid to the quality of both the drum and bass lines is incredible and the result is a trance inducing tune that immediately invades and take over. On top of all that, the band's vocals are incredible, but chances are, you don't need me to tell you that.

Juicier than Juicy Juicy

Like giant beats? How about the bay area? Me neither, but I really do like giant beats and thus legendary bay area rap group Zion I. In case you haven't heard their new stuff from this summer, take a listen. Pop it in the vehicle, drive fast or slow, just turn it up. Trust me, both these songs are huge.
